Artists to watch in this year's Grammys

The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences announced the 2002 Grammy nominations on January 4. This year's nominations include several prominent gay and lesbian recording artists, following the suit of other awards shows this year where LGBT artists and programming are getting increasing recognition.

The 44th annual Grammy Awards will be presented on February 27 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Last year's awards made headlines as people debated rapper Eminem's multiple nominations, given some of his anti-gay lyrics. The pièce de résistance was at the awards ceremony itself when Elton John sang a duet with Eminem. LGBT activists rallied together and demonstrated outside the arena where the ceremony was being held.

This year such hoopla will be absent. Instead, LGBT fans can revel in the fun and root for the several out artists competing in some of the night's major categories.

R.E.M., which is led by openly gay singer and producer Michael Stipe, will contend for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or a Group With Vocal for "Imitation of Life." Stipe is also in contention, separately, for Best Recording Package for the art direction on the album Reveal.

Melissa Etheridge, who garnered a nomi-

nation for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for her song "I Want to be in Love" is one of the many LGBT artists nominated this year.

As expected, Elton John is back in the awards limelight. He is up for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album for I Want Love, and Songs from the West Coast, respectively. Earlier in the year, John had created some buzz with an announcement that he was going to retire from making music after a career spanning four decades. He retracted the statement soon after making it, but these nominations are sure to spur him on to continue making music.

The list of out-nominees is rounded off by Michael Feinstein's Romance on Film, Romance on Broadway album, which is competing for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Feinstein has been nominated before but has yet to win the prestigious Grammy.

Musicians were nominated in over 100 categories including Record of the Year. U2 was the most recognized group this year with eight nominations, including Record of the Year ("Walk On"), Album of the Year (All That You Can't Leave Behind), and Song of the Year (“Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of"). India Arie came in with the second most nominations with nods in seven categories including the most coveted Best New Artist title. Alicia Keys was nominated in six categories.
